The Shoemaker Gnomes

A strange event one occured to a very poor but good-hearted shoemaker. One evening he left his last piece of leather on his workbench, and the next morning he found a perfectly finished pair of shoes. He sold the shoes and bought some more leather which he cut immediately. He did not have time that evening to stitch the pieces and he left them on his workbench again. The next morning the shoes were finished and ready once more.
This went on for some time, until the shoemaker and his wife decided to get to the bottom of the mystery.
They stayed up all night, hidden in the workshop, and they saw two gnomes appear, take the leather, make the shoes and then go away. The shoemaker noticed that the gnomes had no clothes, so he asked his wife the next day to make them some clothes, while he himself made two small pairs of shoes. that night they left the gifts on the same workbench.
The gnomes were very pleased with this kind thought. They put their new clothes on and leapt about with joy. Then they went away and never came back. But the shoe-maker never lacked anything after that, and he and his wife lived happily ever after.
